Shaping Tomorrow: Women’s Leadership and Social Inclusion for a Just Transition

On October 2, 2024, the side event Shaping Tomorrow: Women’s Leadership and Social Inclusion for a Just Transition took place at the Mabu Thermas Grand Resort in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, as part of the CEM15/MI9 meetings. Co-organized by the Equality in Energy Transitions Initiative and the Climate Investment Funds (CIF), the event spotlighted the critical role of gender equality, diversity, and inclusion (GEDI) in advancing just energy transitions.

The session began with an opening keynote by Tariye Gbadegesin, CEO of the Climate Investment Funds, who underscored the importance of integrating GEDI principles in energy transitions to ensure equitable outcomes for all. Gbadegesin highlighted impactful examples of CIF’s gender-responsive programs, including initiatives in Kenya, Nepal, and Brazil, which have empowered women through clean energy solutions and leadership roles.

Moderated by Jane Cohen, Senior Programme Manager at the International Energy Agency (IEA), the panel discussion featured prominent speakers including Sharan Burrow, Global Advocate for Human and Labour Rights, Tony Susandy from Indonesia’s Directorate General of New and Renewable Energy, Government of Indonesia, and Sophie Westlake, Deputy Director of the UK Government’s International Energy Unit. The panelists shared insights on best practices for workforce development, investment, and policy innovation to drive GEDI in the energy sector, offering compelling case studies and actionable recommendations.

The event concluded with the 2024 Equality in Energy Transitions Awards ceremony, moderated by Joanna Osawe, President and CEO of Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE). The awards celebrated achievements in advancing GEDI, with winners recognized in three categories: Emerging Leader, Woman of Distinction, and Organizational Leadership. Notably, Sophie Westlake accepted the Organizational Leadership Award on behalf of her organization, reflecting the UK’s commitment to promoting inclusivity in energy transitions.

The session not only emphasized the transformative power of women’s leadership but also called for increased collaboration across governments, private sectors, and civil society to ensure equitable and inclusive energy transitions globally.
